It was twilight when I arrived on a ranch in Castle Rock for a plein air event. I knew the ranch often had elk and pronghorn visitors, and if I would have any chance of seeing them, I had to get there early.
So I rose at 3, left home at 4 and reached the ranch in the dark. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw him! Racing I grabbed my phone as there was no time to secure my camera. I took a photo as he turned back to see me, then he vanished into the pines. Wow, was I lucky! It is a joy to paint this grand elk and to show a free roaming animal in the wild!
